How To Slow Jimmer Fredette

Feb 25, 2011 4:20 PM

BYU’s Jimmer Fredette leads the country in scoring, with 27.4 points per game through Friday, while shooting 46.1 percent from the field, 41.1 percent from three, and 89.5 percent from the free throw line.

He can shoot off the dribble and finish at the rim with surprising efficiency given his limited athleticism.

The best way to defend Fredette, explains Wyoming coach Heath Schroyer, is to locate him in transition, limit his catch-and-shoot opportunities, and mixup coverages on ball screens.

Kawhi Leonard Draws Comparison To Gerald Wallace

Feb 24, 2011 6:37 PM

Basketball analyst David Thorpe writes today that Kawhi Leonard has the tools to make the transition to the small forward position in the NBA.

Noting Leonard’s speed, length, and never-quit motor, Thorpe says Leonard will thrive in transition and off cuts to the rim.

Leonard leads the No. 6 ranked San Diego State Aztecs in points, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, steals and is second in assists.

How SDSU Got Steve Fisher

Feb 24, 2011 10:10 AM

Rick Bay, then San Diego State’s athletic director, interviewed a host of candidates, including Rick Majerus, before ultimately deciding on Steve Fisher.

But not before doing his due diligence on the NCAA investigation that led to Fisher’s dismissal at Michigan.

Bay called Michigan acquaintance Bernie Machen, who was a provost at Michigan during the scandal and assigned to conduct the university’s internal investigation.

“Bernie told me, ‘Fisher had nothing to do with it ... I told the university that they should have never fired him in the first place,’” Bay says. “That’s all I needed to hear.”

Fredette Sidelined With Leg Injury

Feb 22, 2011 9:59 AM

Jimmer Fredette, the national player of the year candidate has been bothered by a left calf contusion, suffered in BYU’s win over TCU last Saturday.

"It has kind of been stiff and bothering him," BYU coach Dave Rose said of the injury, adding that Fredette "took a real shot" in the TCU game and that "he's been icing (the leg) all weekend, but it's really sore and he couldn't go (Monday)."

Rose added that he's hopeful Fredette will be able to practice today, "but if not, we'll see how he feels on Wednesday."

That's when the Cougars host Colorado State, which sits in third place in the Mountain West Conference standings. Then on Saturday, BYU has another monumental matchup with No. 6 San Diego State.

Runnin? Rebels Documentary Receives High Reviews

Feb 21, 2011 3:03 PM

The HBO produced documentary tracks the UNLV basketball team’s impact on the city of Las Vegas and its rise to national prominence under Jerry Tarkanian.

According to John Katsilometes at the Las Vegas Sun, the film depicts the duality of Tarkanian’s UNLV tenure.

Such triumphs as landing the nation’s best junior college player, Larry Johnson, are offset by grim footage of the infamous arrest of Lloyd Daniels, who was nabbed while trying to buy cocaine from an undercover agent in North Las Vegas. In one of the great PR nightmares in the city's history, the arrest video captured a handcuffed Daniels wearing a UNLV Rebels T-shirt; he never did don a UNLV uniform.

AD: Poor Play Led To Schroyer Firing

Feb 9, 2011 2:18 PM

Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman says he decided to fire men's basketball coach Heath Schroyer because it became clear that a change was necessary.

Burman said that with the team just 1-8 in the Mountain West Conference, he was concerned about the negativity surrounding the program.

"I just felt like rather than walk around on eggshells for the next month, if this thing was going to happen we might as well deal with it right now," he said.

Schroyer was fired Monday, two days after the Cowboys lost their seventh consecutive game and 15th of the season. He had a cumulative record of 49-68.
